What does ‘redundancy’ mean?

Redundancy arises when an employee or group of employees lose their jobs because their employer no longer needs them to carry out the role that they are employed to do. Employers may need to make employees redundant when the organisation needs fewer employees to carry out a particular job, when a business needs no longer exist for the role or perhaps when the company goes into administration

In what circumstances can my employer make me redundant?

An employer must have a fair reason to make you redundant. Redundancy may happen when:

  • The business is closing
  • A specific workplace or location is closing down
  • Fewer employees are needed to do a particular type of work
  • Changes in conditions mean that the business needs employees to perform new roles that are very different to the current role that they do
